Ledges Golf Club in Western Massachusetts

The creation of Ledges Golf Club is a prime example of how a bold idea can become part of a region’s sports infrastructure. In the late 1990s, entrepreneur Pat Roschelo, along with Tom Donaghan and Ken Sullivan, began work on a course that would combine the dramatic terrain of New England with open access to the general public. Rocky outcrops and lengthy approvals complicated construction, but seven years of painstaking work, including large-scale blasting, transformed the uneven terrain into a full-fledged 18-hole course.

Ledges opened to players in 1999 and has since been featured repeatedly in Golfweek and Golf Digest, as well as hosting the Northeast US Amateur qualifier for 12 years.

Course architecture and terrain features

The project was designed by architect Brad Booth, who used the complex rocky landscape to his advantage. A significant portion of the tees and greens are located on natural elevations, offering sweeping views of Pioneer Valley. Boot focused on fast, undulating greens that require precise short game play and on routes that vary in height and direction.

The course is suitable for players of all levels, from consistent handicappers to beginners who need predictable hole geometry and good visibility of landmarks.

The condition of the turf is another strong point of the club. Superintendent Joe Grady, an agronomy specialist who previously worked at Pine Valley, is responsible for maintenance. He leads a team that ensures dense fairways, controlled green speeds, and high-quality drainage. Together, this ensures consistent play throughout the season.

Infrastructure of the club

The club offers individual and group lessons for adults and children. Programs are tailored to the player’s level: there are training sessions for beginners, short game technique work, and swing analysis consultations. Instructors are available at any stage of training, from first visits to the course to seasonal handicap adjustments.

The clubhouse, with the Sunset Grille restaurant, is on the premises. This is a space for players and guests: lunches after a round, watching broadcasts, drinks, and an open terrace overlooking the first and eighteenth holes. Equipment, inventory, and gift certificates are available in the pro shop.

Regional tourism

Ledges Golf Club is located in South Hadley, near I-91 and the Mass Pike, making it a logical stop for travelers exploring the Pioneer Valley and western Massachusetts. After their game, visitors often combine their visit with trips to Amherst, Northampton, or the Berkshires.

Within an hour’s drive are the beaches of New Hampshire and southern Maine, as well as the restaurants and arts spaces of Portsmouth and Portland.

Membership and Season Play

The club offers a wide range of season passes for 2025, from family to student and twilight formats after 1:00 p.m. Pass holders play at no additional charge, which is especially convenient for those who tee off several times a week or prefer short play sessions of 4–9 holes.
